THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP 5 BESTSELLER

Are you lost or are you exploring?

When Zachary Rawlins stumbles across a strange book hidden in his university library it leads him on a quest unlike any other。 Its pages entrance him with their tales of lovelorn prisoners, lost cities and nameless acolytes, but they also contain something impossible: a recollection from his own childhood。

Determined to solve the puzzle of the book, Zachary follows the clues he finds on the cover – a bee, a key and a sword。 They guide him to a masquerade ball, to a dangerous secret club, and finally through a magical doorway created by the fierce and mysterious Mirabel。 This door leads to a subterranean labyrinth filled with stories, hidden far beneath the surface of the earth。

When the labyrinth is threatened, Zachary must race with Mirabel, and Dorian, a handsome barefoot man with shifting alliances, through its twisting tunnels and crowded ballrooms, searching for the end of his story。

You are invited to join Zachary on the starless sea: the home of storytellers, story-lovers and those who will protect our stories at all costs。

I’m having a hard time figuring out how I feel about this book… On the one hand, I do love Morgenstern’s writing—she has a way of making her worlds feel tangible which I love。 On the other hand, I have no idea what happened in this book。 This felt like a bad fever dream。 Very “Alice in Wonderland”-esque。 I also didn’t give one fig about the main character。 So there’s that。

Bee, key and sword。 Heart, feather and crown。 Inside this meandering tale, containing fragments of imaginary myths and fables, a love story is hidden, or rather there are multiple of those。 I fell in love with the poetic way this book was written, and got intrigued by the different threads of the stories that unfolded as the book progressed。 This was very nearly 5* - but the ending was a bit too unsatisfying。。。 I really wanted to hear more about Dorian and Zachary。。。

I feel guilty giving this book 3 stars as other people clearly loved it, but try as i might i just couldn't get into it and gave up after a few chapters。 I am not keen on fantasy generally, and perhaps this book is simply too highbrow for me, but really i thought it was a load of rather pretentious nonsense。 I just didn't get it i guess。 I feel guilty giving this book 3 stars as other people clearly loved it, but try as i might i just couldn't get into it and gave up after a few chapters。 I am not keen on fantasy generally, and perhaps this book is simply too highbrow for me, but really i thought it was a load of rather pretentious nonsense。 I just didn't get it i guess。 。。。more

It's so weird that I ended up enjoying this book so much even though I didn't understand most of what was going on。。。 I have to say, Zachary was not a very interesting character but all the other were so intriguing with their stories and their secrets and their mysteries! I know giving this a 4 star review might confuse someone considering that this is one of the best books I ever read!! Erin Morgenstern knocked this one out of the park。 The only reason I gave this a 4 star review and not 5 stars is because it really threw me off with the stories jumping around so much。 I think it may frustrate some readers, but it is necessary。 I definitely am going to give this another read because I am sure there are things I may have missed。 And the way she ends this, I reall I know giving this a 4 star review might confuse someone considering that this is one of the best books I ever read!!

For so much of this book I felt like I was on a bad, drug induced trip。 I liked the individual stories that wove around the main story and the ending was good。 Getting there though, was torture。

I think I need to reread and then I'll enjoy it more。 I really loved the smaller stories, but I think I missed a lot for the overall plot。 It was an amazing read though! Look, I have no idea what I just read。 This book is very whimsical with a lot of beautiful descriptions and such, but it truly went nowhere。 I thought maybe it was just a slow burn and it would all make sense and come together and there would be a purpose…but it never did any of those things。 Probably one of the most frustrating books I’ve ever read。 Two stars instead of one because I really wanted to know what it all meant。

Carly

This book started off so promising with lots of things and ideas that I loved but then it just went off the rails。 I really have no idea what was going on in a good portion of this book and it dragged on and on and on。 The cats in the book saved it from having 1 star。

It might be terribly unfair to rate a book a 1 star when I didn't even finish。 Simple matter of fact is this book never once gripped me。 I actually picked cleaning my house over reading。 Unfathomable! I had high hopes, but sadly this one just fell flat for me and I cannot wait to return it back to the library。 It might be terribly unfair to rate a book a 1 star when I didn't even finish。 Simple matter of fact is this book never once gripped me。 I actually picked cleaning my house over reading。 Unfathomable! I really wanted to like this book。 It reminded me a lot of Narnia and a Wrinkle in Time from the beginning。 It was a really slow book and it never takes me 2 weeks to read a book。 I just couldn’t fully get into it。 I liked the storyline but I guess it was just not action packed enough for me。

Carol

I really liked The Night Circus, and was so excited for this book。 Long。 Confusing。 Not sure what was happening。 Didn’t really care about the characters。 Ugh。

You'll know whether this book is for you not within the first 60 pages, but rather by the very last one。 This book is definitely for me。 Perhaps it's because of the type of reader I am, but I did not work really hard to interpret any metaphors or symbolism。 I let the book tell me it's story and trusted that between it and my imagination, I would know everything I needed to for it to work its magic。 And indeed, it was magical。 My favorite quote: "A sword does not forget how to find it's mark when You'll know whether this book is for you not within the first 60 pages, but rather by the very last one。 This book is definitely for me。 Perhaps it's because of the type of reader I am, but I did not work really hard to interpret any metaphors or symbolism。 I let the book tell me it's story and trusted that between it and my imagination, I would know everything I needed to for it to work its magic。 And indeed, it was magical。 My favorite quote: "A sword does not forget how to find it's mark when it is held by a hand that knows how to use it。" 。。。more

This book was so promising and I enjoyed the first half a lot but then it went downhill from there。 No plot, the characters were so blank and had no development, the descriptions became monotonous and repetitive and unnecessary, and the whole thing just kind of fell apparent into random scenes and the ending didn't even sum up a lot of threads they introduced which is strange because it's not even a series。 Not to mention the romance was so sudden and unrealistic because the characters hadn't ev This book was so promising and I enjoyed the first half a lot but then it went downhill from there。 No plot, the characters were so blank and had no development, the descriptions became monotonous and repetitive and unnecessary, and the whole thing just kind of fell apparent into random scenes and the ending didn't even sum up a lot of threads they introduced which is strange because it's not even a series。 Not to mention the romance was so sudden and unrealistic because the characters hadn't even had a full conversation and had been in like 2 scenes together and then were basically in love。 I don't recommend this one。 。。。more

The audio version is the way to go even though the book is 19 hours long! Could it use editing down to a more reasonable length, yes; are the characters thinly drawn, yes; does anything really happen, no。 But having a fairy tale read to you out loud, involving a magical kingdom of stories and books so vividly described that I wanted to go see it myself was a pleasure。 The story is an allegory for life, multiple lives and really, not to much does happen in a few years of a 20 something’s life exc The audio version is the way to go even though the book is 19 hours long! ¿Y si esa historia más grande pertenece a su vez a esas historias más chicas? i'll be honest i can't even begin to articulate what this book is actually about。 a large portion of it felt like a fever dream。。。 but a very atmospheric, whimsical, and beautifully written fever dream that i enjoyed getting lost in。 i think anyone who loves books and stories would like this book。 it very much felt like a love story written to stories。this would be closer to a 5 star read for me if it didn't take me so long to get into it。 this was my second attempt at reading (i put it on hold i'll be honest i can't even begin to articulate what this book is actually about。 a large portion of it felt like a fever dream。。。 but a very atmospheric, whimsical, and beautifully written fever dream that i enjoyed getting lost in。 i think anyone who loves books and stories would like this book。 it very much felt like a love story written to stories。this would be closer to a 5 star read for me if it didn't take me so long to get into it。 this was my second attempt at reading (i put it on hold the first time) and i had trouble getting into it both times。 。。。more

Although I loved Morgenstern's first book, The Night Circus, I couldn't get as enthused about The Starless Sea。 The premise of a place of endless knowledge and the plot of mysterious people is intriguing, there were too many side trips into the various book rooms and the story moved too slow。 The setting, which is detailed and has some wonderful description, takes over the story。 I wanted to love this book, but stopped reading a little more than halfway through。 Although I loved Morgenstern's first book, The Night Circus, I couldn't get as enthused about The Starless Sea。 The premise of a place of endless knowledge and the plot of mysterious people is intriguing, there were too many side trips into the various book rooms and the story moved too slow。 The setting, which is detailed and has some wonderful description, takes over the story。 I wanted to love this book, but stopped reading a little more than halfway through。 。。。more

omg this was, and i can’t stress it enough, phenomenal!!! It was so magical and smart, every side story gets slowly woven into the main story and you figure so many things out on the way。 I loved the characters and their relationships。 I just loved the atmosphere and the concept, i didn’t want it to end!! I could’ve read 500 more pages of this

。。。more
